HikerAPI is an Instagram-only API with a pricing model that is genuinely unusual in this market: no subscription at all. You hold a prepaid balance, you are charged per request, and in their words:
"Funds never expire - if you stop making requests, your balance remains unchanged"
That shape is the best thing about it, and people still leave for two reasons that are both about what you are charged for.
We have a full page on HikerAPI. This page answers why you are leaving.
What it costs today
Read from their home page — /p/pricing rendered only a header for us:
- $0.0006 per request, described as "starting at" — which is $0.60 per 1,000 (our arithmetic)
- 100 free requests on signup
- "pure prepaid balance, no monthly/annual fees, no recurring charges"
- "Your per-request rate is permanent - unlock a cheaper rate once by reaching its balance, and it stays for life"
And from search restricted to their own domain — one grade weaker than the rendered page, and flagged as such: Instagram only, "100+ REST endpoints", with three tiers:
| Tier | Per 1,000 requests |
|---|---|
| Standard | $1.00 |
| Business | $0.69 |
| Ultra | $0.60 |
⚠️ So the $0.60 on the cover is the Ultra tier, not the entry. Entry is $1.00 per 1,000 — 1.67× the headline (our arithmetic). Same shape as Oxylabs, whose published per-1,000 is the floor of its cheapest target while an ordinary one costs 2.4× to 2.9× more.
⚠️ One of their own help pages cites 151 Instagram endpoints where the product page says "100+". We publish the product page's figure and record the divergence without picking a side.
🔴 Reason 1: a 404 is billable, and they say so
Their words on what gets charged:
"any successful response (200, 403, 404)" — and "50x server errors we do not charge"
A 404 costs money. For an Instagram profile scraper that is not an edge case: a deleted account, a private account and a mistyped handle all return responses you pay for. If your input list comes from user submissions or from a stale database, the share of billable misses is your real unit price, and nobody can tell you what it is but your own logs.
Credit where due: not charging for their own 5xx is the right call, and several vendors do not say either way.
What fixes it: nothing on this page fully, and we are not going to pretend our own billing is immune — we charge per API call, and a call that finds nothing is still a call. What changes the exposure is input quality, not vendor choice.
Reason 2: one platform, and you needed more than one
Instagram only is a deliberate, defensible choice: 100+ endpoints on one platform is depth that no multi-platform vendor matches. It stops working the day your product needs a second platform, and then you are integrating a second vendor, a second schema and a second invoice.
What fixes it: one response shape across several platforms. We do twelve with a published per-field contract; ScrapeCreators does 38+ APIs at $1.88 per 1,000; SocialCrawl claims 67; EnsembleData does eight, including Reddit and X, which we do not serve.
What does not fix it: ScrapingBee and the general-purpose fetch APIs will reach any URL, but they hand you HTML — so you trade one maintained integration for selectors you maintain yourself.
The options, side by side
| Unit | Entry | Subscription | Expiry | Scope | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HikerAPI | request, 403/404 billable | $1.00/1K · $0.60 at Ultra | none | funds never expire | Instagram, 100+ endpoints |
| ScrapeCreators | credit | $47 · $1.88/1K | none | never expires | 38+ APIs |
| SocialCrawl | credit | £15/mo | plan | never expires | 67 claimed |
| EnsembleData | unit per day | $100/mo | plan | resets daily | 8 social |
| HonestHook | API call | free, 1,000 credits/mo | none required | purchased never expire | 12, one shape |
Where HikerAPI is better than we are
Depth on Instagram. 100+ endpoints on one platform against our twelve platforms at the depth the public surface gives us. If your product is Instagram, that is the right trade and we are not it.
The rate lock. "Unlock a cheaper rate once by reaching its balance, and it stays for life" — a volume discount that does not reset when your traffic dips. We do not offer anything like it.
No plan, no floor, no expiry. An idle quarter costs nothing and the balance is still there. Our purchased balance behaves the same way, but our free allowance is monthly rather than a one-time 100 requests.
And they publish what counts as billable, which sounds like a small thing until you compare it with the pages in this family that say nothing at all.
Where we are better, stated narrowly
Twelve platforms in one response shape, so a second platform is a different path on the same integration rather than a second vendor.
An hourly archive of what is rising, never deleted — the question a per-request API cannot answer about a moment nobody recorded.

HikerAPI's $0.0006-per-request rate, the 100 free requests on signup, the
prepaid-balance and permanent-rate wording and the list of billable response
codes read from hikerapi.com on 3 October 2026 — primary source, read directly
from the page, because /p/pricing rendered only a header on that date. The
Instagram-only coverage, the "100+ REST endpoints" figure and the Standard
$1.00 / Business $0.69 / Ultra $0.60 per-1,000 tiers come from search
restricted to hikerapi.com on the same date — one grade below a rendered page,
and flagged as such in the body. The $0.60-per-1,000 conversion and the 1.67×
comparison are our arithmetic. One of their help pages cites 151 endpoints
against the product page's "100+"; the divergence is recorded and not resolved.
